Why Hangar Floors Need a Skydrol-Resistant Topcoat
Skydrol (and equivalent phosphate-ester hydraulic fluids like HyJet) is one of the most aggressive chemicals in everyday industrial use. It softens and dissolves standard epoxy and many polyurethanes within hours of contact. Add Jet-A spills, AvGas, hydraulic oil, brake fluid, de-icing chemicals, and the mechanical abuse of tow tugs, jack stands, and dropped tools — and a typical “industrial epoxy” floor fails fast. Hangar floors require a purpose-built urethane or aliphatic polyaspartic topcoat with documented Skydrol resistance over a properly bonded epoxy base. That is the system Cape Cod Coatings installs.

Build-up:
- Diamond grind / shot blast to CSP 3–5.
- Moisture testing (ASTM F1869 / F2170) and mitigation primer as required.
- High-build, high-solids epoxy base coat, 100% solids, low-VOC.

What makes hangar flooring different from regular industrial epoxy?
The Skydrol problem. Phosphate-ester hydraulic fluid destroys standard epoxy and many polyurethanes. Hangar floors require a documented Skydrol-resistant topcoat over a high-build epoxy base, not a generic shop-floor product.
Will the floor handle Jet-A, AvGas, and hydraulic oil spills?
Yes. The ProREZ aviation topcoat is documented for resistance to Jet-A, AvGas, Skydrol, MIL-PRF-83282 hydraulic fluid, brake fluid, and common deicing chemistries.
Can you install while the hangar is operational?
Yes. We routinely phase installs around aircraft movements, with overnight and weekend windows. We
protect fuel lines, door tracks, and adjacent bays during prep
How slippery is a high-gloss hangar floor when wet?
Gloss finishes look beautiful but can be slick when wet. We engineer anti-slip aggregate into maintenance bays, wash bays, and entry zones, and keep the gloss in the spotless display areas where it belongs.
Is the floor UV stable under translucent hangar doors and skylights?
Yes. The aliphatic urethane/polyaspartic topcoat is UV-stable and non-yellowing.
